Noise Limits

No motorcycle competing in any motor sports event at Stratotech may run an unbaffled or "Open Exhaust" system. All vehicles participating events WILL be required to pass a sound inspection.

The test will be from the SAE J1287 test method. The decibel limit will be 95 db. The test requires that the meter be held in a position that is 45 degrees off  the direction of the exhaust outlet, back and away.  The meter sensor must be at 90 degrees to that, pointing to the back, and the meter must be 20 inches away from the tailpipe with a wind sock over the sensor. Motorcycles that fail to meet these standards at tech or any time during the day will not be allowed to compete.

If the rider lets the packing "wear out" or if the bike is noticed on track louder than usual, then the rider will be called to tech and "tech'ed"......... If found guilty then the rider will pay for the tech and if the sound is not remedied, the rider will be disqualified.

To date there have only been a hand full of bikes over the allowed 95 db limit

The bikes with the largest noise issues were the single cylinder "Motard" style bikes with small aftermarket exhaust cans. There are still several aftermarket exhaust cans that will work, they just need the can volume to baffle the noise.

There were a few V-Twin and In-Line fours that failed the sound tests, but only because the pipes baffling was blown out. After repacking the exhaust cans the bikes that failed passed the testing.

There are people from the WMRC selling aftermarket exhaust tip inserts that will reduce the noise level of your bike without affecting performance. Contact the WMRC for details on where to get these inserts.
