View Full Version : Broken Collarbone

I broke my collar bone back on May 31 while racing in formula twins. After x-rays the doc gave me a figure 8 brace to wear and said the break needed this type of brace. After a week and a half of this my arm began swelling up badly, I went to emergency and the doc said the figure 8 brace was the problem. So he said use the sling.
It has been 5 weeks now, and after x-rays there is still a centimeter spacing between the bones with an over lapp. The doc says go back to the figure 8 brace and come in every 2 weeks, it will be another 6 to 8 weeks. If it doesn't improve after this amount of time, then will send you to a orthapedic surgeon.
This is quite frustrating, does anyone out their have any advise or know of better medical people I could see.
P.S. ( Don't break your collar bone )

Barry!
Sorry to hear about your problem. When I was up for round 2 I was looking for you.
Have you gone to a sports clinic?

Really sorry to hear Barry. I hope you can get it healed up without surgery. A referral to sports medicine clinic as Joe suggets sounds like a good idea. Good luck with it.

Some Ultra-sound should bring those bone ends to life! Good luck with the healing.

He's using a Ducati collar-bone...they can't easily be fixed like a Honda collar-bone! Ordering a new one takes 6 weeks from the factory...and it still needs to be painted. Trying to build one out of unobtainium to match the original is next to impossible. Probably better off selling the entire shoulder and getting a replacement. If you need extra race money you can also dump a kidney at the same time.

I hope the sports clinic lead works out for you. Keep asking for help and pushing until you find someone who is responsive.
Hope to see you back at the track soon.

Barry: My collar bone broke last year during the round 2 MWT race so I feel your pain. I had the Doctor set the bone as best as they could when I was at the hospital. I almost dropped to the ground but I wanted the ends as close together as posible. I used the figure 8 and a sling for 1 week before I removed the sling for sleeping during week 2. It sounds like you have complications that require an orthopedic specialist, which I consulted to make sure my collar bone was set right. If it's not then they have to re-break it and go in for a surgical setting via a plate and screws. I was racing 5 weeks after the break, so if yours isn't at that stage yet, see the orthopedic specialist pronto. Hope things go well for you.

I can understand your frustration a bit Barry as it's been just over 2 weeks since I broke my foot and on the 4th Dr. I have seen in Ft Sask. has finally allowed me to see an Xray of the break today. Out of 4 Dr's no 2 had the same opinion although the last 2 were close they varied on hard cast vrs aircast. I went from the first Dr saying you should be able to walk on it next week, 2nd guy really could give a care and said come back in a week after the swelling goes down, 3rd Dr, you need more Xrays, your foot is really bad, more drugs prescribed to a 4th today which I have now learned what IV therapy is.
Here's hoping you find a good Dr. who gets you on the right track and fixes things right and you get back to the track.

Thanks for the info Aaron, I went back to the figure 8 brace but I am in huge pain. I have some different medical people to see next week, hopefully I can get this mess sorted out.
You know breaking the bone isn't the huge deal, its dealing with doctors who are too busy to give a shit, all I want is to be referred to someone that gives a damn about what they do, and knows what there doing.
But I'm O.K. just need to vent, I'll be supporting you guys and gals this week end, have fun all.
