EMRA could use some of this....

Correct me if I'm wrong regarding Bingos and Casinos, but they are based under a strict set of rules (been many a year since ive held a board position). Alberta Gaming is very stringent on how gambling money can be used, primarily for minor (18 & under) events and promotions. That's why you see a lot of junior hockey and soccer clubs hosting them (parents working them).
Promotion is tough. It seems as though our stands are usually friends and family of racers. Prime advertising to the general public costs $$. That is something we could bring up at the AGM - to see IF the club is willing to pay.

I would agree that there is very strict rules on what proceeds of gambling can be used for. But I do believe that we could get our club in on something like that. I look forward to the AGM

Ever try a calender? The large poster style ones tend to be easy to give out, and they stay up alot longer than advertising posters do. Another thing may be to also target the autoparts stores, they are busier than bike shops..

Not sure what you mean when you're referring to a calendar. But most Parts stores in Edmonton are Corporate stores and have strict rules as to who and what advertising can be done. Napa, Parts Source etc. We would love to work with an independant parts store but I haven't found one, do you have any suggestions?

Um, where are the photos of scantily clad women?

Some suggestions: Call into radio stations, make a shout out and mention the upcoming races and the dates. Free advertising. Get someone with some video editing talent to put together a high action, lots of carnage/crash footage video with catchy music. Throw in tons of flashes of scantily clad women walking in the pits and in the stands and girls in leather race suits! Get everyone to post it all over their Facebook accounts. Stratotech and EMRA have Facebook pages. I never knew that until I just searched for it. Try to get the EMRA poster into more places like that go-kart place at Whitemud or west end.

Although the car crowd is huge, Edmonton and Alberta in general have a huge motorcycle (and recreational) market. Tons of people into quads and dirt bikes and there are a lot of cruiser people that come to our races. Find their forums, post up race notices there. You know what would be fun? Next year arrange to have a street quad race during lunch time.

Oh, one more thing, we should make room on the EMRA race poster to advertise Track Attack and make being part of the racing more accessible to the sportbike riding public.

Cheers!

We get calendars like this given to us by our suppliers all the time, http://www.pbase.com/455rocket/image/51066387 , edit it to our needs of course. Event dates in one corner, Hot chick in another, Couple pit shots, and of course the flagship pic of a sweet power wheelie coming outta the last corner for the checkered flag! Did I just give away a poster idea for next years contest? Point being, People can put them up in their garage, at work, ect, they are easy to give away, they stay up for a full year, and shouldnt cost much.

Another thing, schools\colleges could be a good target for advertising, they might even be able to provide some free\cheap help (think av club doing a promo video type of stuff)

As far as part store suggestions, sorry, no I dont, I am from BC and dont know Edmonton area at all..

I have a hard time accepting crashing / carnage as appealing factors to draw crowds. Our crashes are rare and unspectacular (hopefully). As for scantily clad or leather wrapped women; do we have to stoop to that level? Granted our women racers are all attractive, beautiful ladies and should be viewed according to their talents rather than their assets.
Perhaps Justin could do a calendar spread, seeing as we all can't be him ;P

I can provide a bit of background on some of the suggestions mentioned in the posts regarding advertising, media relations, and accessing gambling funds (all of which have been tried or at least considered), but Ian, Ev, Fred, and/or Thorsten would be able to provide more detail.

Going back to Jon's original question I expect that the answer is probably similar when stacking up the popularity of NASCAR against the virtual obscurity of AMA Superbike racing. (I do not understand this but the numbers out there don't lie. More locally compare the fan attendance of a drag racing event or the Indy compared to a Canadian Superbike race.)

From my perspective the primary goal of the club is to give people the chance to road race locally and I think we do a pretty good job on that front. Naturally there are still improvement opportunities on and off the track; I look forward to hearing more of them.

One more thing to those wanting to help promote the club: I recommend volunteering to work at the club's booth at the Bike Show so you can promote the club to a friendly audience. This is an eye opener. You are at a bike specific event and motorcycle road racing is still a hard sell to non-enthusiasts.
