EDMONTON - A 41-year-old man was airlifted to hospital Saturday night after an all-terrain vehicle crash during a drag racing event just south of Edmonton.
Shortly before 8 p.m., STARS air ambulance landed on the racetrack at the Castrol Raceway in Nisku, where paramedics picked up a man who had been involved in a “quadding incident,” spokesman David Fairbanks said. The victim was not wearing a helmet.
The man suffered a head injury and was airlifted to the University of Alberta hospital in critical condition.
The event was live-streamed online, and the archive of that video identified the victim as a worker at the racetrack.
The video also shows other workers using all-terrain vehicles to navigate the track.
The incident occurred during the NitroJam Rocky Mountain Nationals, a high-profile drag racing event.
Nisku is 25 kilometres south of Edmonton.

UPDATE ON TRACK OFFICIAL ATV INCIDENT
First, Thank you all for your kind words and well wishes- they are being passes long to the IHRA Official who suffered the Injury. I just wanted to send out a quick FYI- the IHRA official suffered a slight concussion, broken shoulder and minor scrapes and bruises. After a 24 hour stay at hospital to watch for any signs of further/delayed head injury symptoms, he has been released with a clean bill of health and on his way back home State side.
Our policy at Castrol Raceway is EVERY head injury is considered "critical" until assessed otherwise (we don't mess around when it comes to safety- it is always our first priority). It is our normal protocol to call in the "Big Guns" (i.e. STARS) if a person shows ANY signs of a potential head or spinal injury; we leave it to the emergency response professionals to asses each situation
