Bonneville Land Speed Record.....Not..

Just returned from a tour through the US (9K in 7 days) that had us traveling through Utah past the Bonneville Salt Flats. It is publicly accessible ... and very alluring, so I said to the other guys as we approached Wendover through Nevada....why not?

The salt flats have the consistency of wet sand, if you push your toe into the surface it will deform like sand. As the guys from the Nevada Triumph Race Club told us in their paddock area, it's getting the salt off your bike that is the challenge. The salt sprayed up as you ride is like wallpaper paste, into your rad, on your fairing, your lowers, rims etc. etc. etc.

Regardless of the required cleanup, I made two runs with my fully laddened K1200S (to the amusement of the Triumph race team). In the oppressive 42C desert heat, unofficially 252kph with the wind and 248kph back into the wind.

I would recommend it to anyone who gets into the area, and has a need for speed, 15 miles of 'as fast as you can go'.
